Designer/Illustrator Jessica Hische created this tongue-in-cheek chart that I think is so clever. If only we could pass this along to all of the stingy clients out there so they could better understand that you get what you pay for.

Design is so tough to monetize because most of the “work” is not tangible — you’re paying for the thought process and problem-solving and creative expertise that lead to the final product, not just the technical production. I’m trying to come up with a way to explain this in my contract to clients. It needs to simplify this concept of “the creative process” without sounding so “artsy” and frankly, off-putting to many in the corporate world. It’s a difficult thing to merge art and business, but I’m slowly figuring it out.
